Current President
Mr Rod Barnett, principal of Rod J Barnett & Associates, has been elected as the
President of the Law Society of the Australian Capital Territory for 2007-08.
Mr Barnett’s election was declared at the Society’s AGM on Thursday, 20 September
2007. He succeeds Mr Greg Walker (Trinity Law) who steps down after serving two
terms as President. Mr Walker remains on the Council as Immediate Past President.
Mr Barnett has for some years run a boutique commercial law practice from his premises
in Fyshwick. The practice specialises in business and commercial law, property law
and general litigation.
Mr Barnett has been a Councillor of the Society for almost twenty years, the last
twelve years as Treasurer and Vice-President. He has also served for many years
as a member of the Society’s Complaints Committee and Practice Management Committee.
He intends to refocus the Society’s attention on services to members now that the
new and sweeping legislation aimed at introducing national model regulation of the
profession has been passed by the Assembly and is settling down.
Mr Barnett is determined that the Society’s regulatory responsibilities, conferred
on it by the new Legal Profession Act 2006, will not be compromised by renewed attention
to the needs and interests of the Territory’s lawyers. Last updated 20 September
2007.
